Greetings gardeners, farmers, and lovers of the Earth…
Hoping I find you well and enjoying the wonders of the natural world…
I’d like to share with you an insight that can help improve the efficiency, productivity, resilience and all round self-reliance of any garden or farm.
and will incorporate the plant species available to fill all niches creating ecologies over time that support a range of birds, mammals, reptiles, Insects, fungi, aquatic life and many smaller life forms in the mulch layer and soil. It is a coherent, intelligent and responsive force that assembles dynamic living systems of species to co-exist together in a dynamic state of adaptability and resilience.
To truly appreciate how significant Nature/Gaia is to life on Earth and how pervasive its influence is, recent scientific studies into the Earth’s current living biomass have revealed that the natural world without any assistance from human kind, accounts for around 98% of the total living biomass. (This includes wilderness areas, many parks and reserves, abandoned regrowth areas, and the aquatic life in creeks, dams, rivers, lakes and the oceans).
Human beings themselves and all of our farming of crops and livestock make up the remaining 2%, and of this, nature still provides the sunlight and warmth, the rain/ water supply, air containing co2 to build the structure of carbon based life, minerals and nutrients where the soil is healthy.
This is overwhelming evidence that nature/Gaia is indeed an omnipotent force and has a time tested blueprint for sustaining life on Earth over millions of years. It also profoundly highlights how much we still depend on nature for all the essentials of life. Clean air, water and food…
The earliest forms of gardening and farming were extremely unobtrusive to the natural world. It was simply identifying useful plants in the local environment and learning to propagate more of them where they were already growing well. People soon learned how to sow the seeds from their favourite species and to propagate perennial plants from cuttings, division and layering, gradually changing the balance of their environment to enhanced food production. Concurrent with this process was the identification of desirable fish, birds and mammal species that were then deliberately encouraged with supplemental feeding, habitat enhancement and protection.
After 35 years of study and practical application into all things gardening, farming and self-reliance, I see that it comes down to our relationship with Gaia, that directs our strategy/ approach to food production. After recognizing the profound and integral role that Gaia plays in sustaining all of life on Earth, a deep sense of appreciation and a spirit of collaboration is all that remains. I call this integrated approach ‘Holistic Natural Efficiency’ or Zen-Farming, (Doing only what nature actually requires, to thrive with our range of crops and livestock).
A brief summary of this integrated approach follows…
*Optimize the natural growing conditions – Water and soil
*Utilize and enhance site micro-climates to expand the range of productive species.
* Design an Integrated-holistic layout for your property to strategically locate earth works, Infrastructure and all species into strategic production systems across the landscape.
*Integrated chickens and other livestock managing seasonally-maturing orchards and cropping areas.
*Strategically establish a foundation of perennial food and feed crops for reliability and resilience
*Planting all species into their optimal growing conditions within production guilds
*Promoting self-seeding where possible and learning to grow most annual grains, legumes, root and leaf crops by direct broadcasting into the mulch layer.
*No-till soil management, legume ground covers, shrubs and trees, Soil cover maintained with living and decomposing mulches.
*Promoting the Succession of useful species towards a thriving production ecology.
*A natural farming approach, performing all necessary actions at the optimal timing for maximum benefit and productive momentum.
With these fundamentals in place, we can work 100% in alignment with nature’s ability to thrive and become cooperative stewards of our own thriving production ecologies. With full implementation of the ‘Holistic Natural Efficiency’ approach, we can also phase out all unnecessary and wasteful practices including ongoing ploughing and tilling the soil, continual mowing, slashing and brush cutting, using synthetic chemicals that disrupt the natural balance and wasting nature’s regrowth impulse in the name of ‘maintenance’.
We instead get on the front foot co-creating with Gaia, optimizing the growing conditions and introducing our crops into their ideal niche within holistic production guilds. Achieving this in the fastest, most naturally efficient way through an integrated holistic design and applied natural practices, eliminating ‘maintenance needs’ and phasing out input expenses.
I’m looking for land holders interested in this approach, and in creating natural production systems of lasting abundance, resilience and self-reliance.
